Sleeping Under the Stars at 4,600m
I never thought I could sleep in a luxury bed while staring at the Milky Way through a transparent dome. The Salkantay glacier right in front of you at sunrise — absolutely unreal. Worth every penny.

This four-day expedition combines two of the most powerful experiences in the Peruvian Andes: the Ausangate mountain circuit and the iconic Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), all within a remote, high-altitude trekking route.
Unlike classic treks, this journey is not about ruins or endpoints. It’s about movement through extreme landscapes, crossing high passes, walking beneath glaciers, and experiencing the raw scale of the Andes.
Over four days, you will trek above 4,000 meters through isolated valleys, encounter traditional herding communities, and witness constantly changing scenery. From mineral-colored mountains to glacial lakes and towering ice peaks.
It’s a route designed for travelers seeking altitude, isolation, and a deeper connection with the natural and cultural world of the Andes.
From the vibrant slopes of Vinicunca to the massive slopes of Ausangate, this expedition delivers one of the most complete high-mountain experiences in Peru.
We depart Cusco at 4:00 AM, traveling south through the Andean highlands toward Pitumarca, where the landscape shifts into rugged valleys and traditional farming zones.
After a short stop for supplies, we continue to Q’esuyuno, the starting point of our trek.
The Experience
We meet our horsemen team and begin a gradual ascent toward Kayrawiry, allowing time for acclimatization while taking in the surrounding mountain scenery.
After lunch and a short rest, we continue toward the first major highlight: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca).
The final ascent reveals the mountain’s layered mineral colors, one of the most unique natural formations in the Andes. Wildlife sightings such as vicuñas or condors are common in this region.
After time at the summit, we descend back to our campsite.
The Night
Settle into camp in Kayrawiry, where a warm meal and the stillness of the high Andes mark the end of the first day.
The second day introduces the first major high-altitude challenge.
The Experience
After an early breakfast, we retrace part of the trail back toward Q’esuyuno before beginning a steep ascent to Condor Pass (5,100 m), the highest point of the expedition.
The climb is demanding but continuous views of glacial lakes, rolling valleys, and the Ausangate massif make every step worthwhile.
From the summit, the scale of the Andes becomes fully apparent, with glaciers descending into deep valleys dotted with alpacas.
After time at the pass, we descend to our lunch point before continuing toward Ausangate Lake.
The Stay
Camp beside the lake, surrounded by glaciers and open mountain terrain, one of the most scenic campsites of the trek.
Today continues deeper into the Ausangate circuit.
The Experience
We begin with a steady climb toward Abra Campo Pass (5,000 m), another high-altitude crossing surrounded by dramatic mountain views.
The route passes through landscapes filled with alpacas, llamas, and wild vicuñas, while condors are often seen soaring overhead.
At the summit, panoramic views extend across the Ausangate region, revealing glaciers, valleys, and remote peaks.
Descending from the pass, the trail leads through scenic valleys toward our lunch spot before continuing to Qampa camp.
The Stay
Camp in a quiet, remote valley, a perfect setting to unwind after one of the most complete trekking days of the expedition.
• Distance: Approx. 15 km
• Max Altitude: 5,000 m
• Difficulty: Challenging (High-altitude trekking)
The final day combines mountain views with a rewarding finish.
The Experience
After breakfast, we hike toward the base of the glacier, followed by a short ascent to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Vilcanota mountain range.
From this vantage point, the scale of the Ausangate region is fully visible, a final reminder of the terrain we’ve crossed.
We then descend toward Qomer Lake, where the landscape softens into rolling highland terrain.
Continuing onward, we reach Pacchanta, a small Andean village known for its natural hot springs.
The Finish
After days of trekking, the Pacchanta hot springs offer the perfect recovery, relaxing in warm waters while surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
The Return
In the afternoon, private transport takes us back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.

This is a challenging 4-day trek that takes place entirely at high altitude.
The route includes multiple mountain passes, often exceeding 5,000 meters (16,400+ ft), with long hiking days and cold conditions. The terrain is remote and physically demanding.
Good physical condition and prior trekking experience are strongly recommended. This trek is best suited for travelers looking for a true high-altitude adventure.
You’ll be trekking in cold, high-altitude environments, so proper gear is essential:
Your main duffel is carried by the support team, allowing you to hike with just your daily essentials.
Groups are limited to a maximum of 10 travelers.
This ensures better pacing on a demanding route, more personalized support, and a safer, more controlled experience in remote conditions.
Acclimatization is essential for the Ausangate Trek.
We recommend spending at least 3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before starting. Since this trek stays at high altitude throughout, proper acclimatization will significantly impact your comfort and performance.
Hydration, rest, and gradual altitude exposure beforehand are key.
Yes, you can hire a private porter for additional support.
While your main duffel is already carried by the support team, a private porter can help reduce the weight of your daypack or carry extra personal items.
Given the altitude and difficulty of this trek, this is a highly recommended option for added comfort.
Yes, Sky Dome Camps operates fully legally and with all required permits.
As part of the Sam Travel Corporation, we comply with all official regulations to operate in the region. Our team has extensive experience leading high-altitude expeditions, with a strong focus on safety, logistics, and high-quality service.
This ensures a reliable and well-organized experience on one of the most demanding treks in Peru.

Real experiences from travelers who slept under the Andean sky
I never thought I could sleep in a luxury bed while staring at the Milky Way through a transparent dome. The Salkantay glacier right in front of you at sunrise — absolutely unreal. Worth every penny.
Sky DomeWe did the full Salkantay Trek and stayed at the dome on night two. After a hard day of hiking, coming back to a real bed, hot shower and that view of the mountain? Nothing compares to that.
Salkantay TrekI have camped across Patagonia and Nepal but nothing matched this. The dome is warm, beautifully designed and the silence at 4,600m is something else entirely. I woke up at 3am just to stare at the stars.
