Lares Cultural Trek: 4 Days to Machu Picchu

4 days / 3 nights Moderate 4200m / 13779ft 8 Expedition

The Andean Route Through Living Communities

This four-day journey offers one of the most culturally immersive routes to Machu Picchu, following a lesser-traveled path through the highlands of the Sacred Valley.

Starting from Huaran, the trek moves through remote Andean communities where traditional lifestyles remain intact, from weaving practices to alpaca herding and Quechua language.

Combined with high mountain passes, glacial landscapes, and a final train journey to Machu Picchu, this route delivers a balanced experience of culture, nature, and history.

It’s a trek designed for travelers who want to go beyond the classic routes and experience the Andes through its people, not just its scenery.

From the isolated village of Cancha Cancha to the hot springs of Lares and the citadel of Machu Picchu, this journey reveals a deeper, more human side of the Inca world.

  • Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights
  • Highlights: Pisac ruins, Cancha Cancha community, high Andean passes, waterfalls, Lares Hot Springs, Machu Picchu
  • Max Altitude: ~4,500–4,700 m
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

Why Choose the Lares Cultural Trek?

  • A Cultural Immersion First: Unlike other treks, Lares prioritizes interaction with local communities, offering a genuine look into Andean traditions, textiles, and daily life.
  • A Quieter Alternative Route: Avoid the crowds of the Inca Trail while still experiencing high mountain scenery, glacial lakes, and remote valleys.
  • A Balanced Trekking Experience: Challenging enough to feel like a true adventure, but without the extreme physical demands of routes like Salkantay or Choquequirao.
  • Landscapes + People: This is one of the few routes where the highlight is not just the scenery, but the cultural encounters along the way.
  • The Complete Journey to Machu Picchu: Combine trekking, cultural discovery, and a scenic train ride into one seamless experience.

Details of the trip

Day 1 | Cusco – Pisac – Huaran – Cancha Cancha

We depart Cusco early in the morning, heading into the Sacred Valley toward Pisac, where the journey begins with a guided visit of this important Inca site.

The Experience

Explore terraces, ceremonial areas, and one of the largest Inca cemeteries before continuing deeper into the valley.

After a stop in Calca for final supplies, we drive to Huaran, where we meet our horsemen team and begin the trek.

The trail follows a gradual ascent along a river valley toward Cancha Cancha, offering a smooth introduction to the route.

Arriving at the community, you’ll experience one of the most traditional villages in the Andes: isolated, self-sustaining, and deeply connected to ancestral customs.

The Night

Settle into camp and, if available, visit a local family to learn about daily life and traditions in the high Andes.

  • Distance: Approx. 9 km
  • Camp Altitude: 3,900 m
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Day 2 | Cancha Cancha – Pachacutec Pass – Quiswarani

Today is the most demanding and scenic day of the trek.

The Experience

We begin with a steady ascent toward Pachacutec Pass (4,500 m), the highest point of the route.

Along the climb, the landscape opens into views of glaciers, alpine lakes, and roaming alpaca herds, creating one of the most iconic Andean scenes.

At the summit, the scale of the mountains becomes fully apparent.

From here, we descend along a quieter trail toward Quiswarani, passing waterfalls and remote highland settlements where traditional clothing and language remain part of daily life.

The Stay

Camp near the community, surrounded by mountains and flowing water.

  • Distance: Approx. 12 km
  • Max Altitude: 4,500 m
  • Difficulty: Challenging

Day 3 | Quiswarani – Cuncani – Lares Hot Springs – Ollantaytambo

Today combines trekking with a transition back toward the Sacred Valley.

The Experience

We begin with a gradual ascent to Willqaqasa Pass (4,200 m), where panoramic views reveal glacial lakes and surrounding peaks.

Descending from the pass, the trail leads through open puna landscapes and agricultural zones toward Cuncani, where interaction with local families and children is often possible.

From here, we meet our transport and descend into warmer valleys toward Lares.

The Recovery

Arrive at the Lares Hot Springs, where natural thermal pools offer the perfect way to relax after several days of trekking.

After lunch, we continue by vehicle to Ollantaytambo, where we board the train to Aguas Calientes.

  • Distance: Approx. 15 km
  • Max Altitude: 4,200 m
  • Activity: Trekking + hot springs + train
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes

Day 4 | Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco

Our final day begins early with a bus ride up to Machu Picchu.

The Experience

As the morning clouds lift, the Inca citadel appears among the jungle-covered peaks, the final reward of the journey.

Enjoy a 2-hour guided exploration, visiting temples, terraces, and ceremonial spaces while understanding the engineering and vision behind the Inca civilization.

After the tour, you’ll have time to explore independently or simply take in the atmosphere.

The Return

In the afternoon, we take the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by private transport to Cusco.

  • Activity: Guided cultural visit
  • Guided Tour: Approx. 2 hours
  • Return to Cusco: Evening arrival

The Dome Made the Trek Unforgettable

We did the full Salkantay Trek and stayed at the dome on night two. After a hard day of hiking, coming back to a real bed, hot shower and that view of the mountain? Nothing compares to that.

Best Night of My Life

I have camped across Patagonia and Nepal but nothing matched this. The dome is warm, beautifully designed and the silence at 4,600m is something else entirely. I woke up at 3am just to stare at the stars.
