Sleeping Under the Stars at 4,600m
I never thought I could sleep in a luxury bed while staring at the Milky Way through a transparent dome. The Salkantay glacier right in front of you at sunrise — absolutely unreal. Worth every penny.

This full-day journey takes you to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). One of the most striking natural landscapes in the Andes and one of the highest accessible hikes in Peru.
Located deep within the Vilcanota mountain range, Rainbow Mountain rises above 5,000 meters, where mineral-rich layers have created its distinctive multicolored slopes.
Despite being a single-day experience, this is a true high-altitude adventure, combining scenic drives, remote Andean landscapes, and a rewarding hike to one of the most unique viewpoints in South America.
It’s designed for travelers who want to experience something extraordinary in a short time, without committing to a multi-day trek.
From early morning departures to panoramic views at the summit, this journey delivers a complete Andean experience in just one day.
We begin early in the morning with hotel pickup in Cusco, typically between 4:00 and 5:00 AM, heading south toward the Andes.
The Journey
The drive takes approximately 3 hours, passing through traditional villages, agricultural terraces, and high-altitude valleys as the sun rises over the mountains.
We stop in the Cusipata area for breakfast before continuing to the trailhead at around 4,600 meters above sea level.
The Experience
The hike begins gradually, following a wide valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks and herds of alpacas.
The ascent to Rainbow Mountain takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on pace and acclimatization.
As you gain elevation, the air becomes thinner and the landscape more dramatic, until the final climb reveals the vibrant colors of Vinicunca.
At the summit, you’ll have time to explore, take photos, and take in panoramic views of the surrounding Andes.
For those who want an extended experience, there is the option to visit the nearby Red Valley, a striking landscape of deep red mountain formations.
The Return
After descending back to the trailhead, we return to Cusipata for lunch before beginning the drive back to Cusco.
Arrival is typically in the late afternoon or early evening.

Porterage & Safety
To customize your expedition, the following services and equipment can be added to your booking:
This hike is considered moderate, but the main challenge is the extreme altitude rather than the distance.
However, horses can be rented locally if you prefer not to hike the full distance. These are managed directly by local communities and can be arranged on-site at the start of the trail.
This offers a flexible option to enjoy the experience with less physical effort.
Rainbow Mountain reaches approximately 5,200 meters (17,060 ft), making it one of the highest day hikes in the region. The trail itself is relatively short, but the thin air can make it feel more demanding.
No prior trekking experience is required, but a basic level of fitness and proper acclimatization are essential.
Conditions can change quickly at high altitude, so packing smart is key:
Trekking poles are optional but helpful for stability.
Groups are limited to a maximum of 10 travelers.
This allows for a better-paced hike, more personalized attention, and flexibility depending on how each traveler responds to the altitude.
Acclimatization is critical for this experience.
We recommend spending at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the tour. Since the hike reaches over 5,000 meters, proper acclimatization will make a significant difference in how you feel during the climb.
Staying well hydrated, eating light meals, and avoiding alcohol beforehand are strongly recommended.
Private porters are not available for this tour.

Real experiences from travelers who slept under the Andean sky
I never thought I could sleep in a luxury bed while staring at the Milky Way through a transparent dome. The Salkantay glacier right in front of you at sunrise — absolutely unreal. Worth every penny.
Sky DomeWe did the full Salkantay Trek and stayed at the dome on night two. After a hard day of hiking, coming back to a real bed, hot shower and that view of the mountain? Nothing compares to that.
Salkantay TrekI have camped across Patagonia and Nepal but nothing matched this. The dome is warm, beautifully designed and the silence at 4,600m is something else entirely. I woke up at 3am just to stare at the stars.
