From Glacier Pass to Cloud Forest in 3 Days
The classic Salkantay trek takes five days. This express route delivers its most dramatic sections in just three, without cutting the highlights.
In three days, you cross the Salkantay Pass at 4,630 meters beneath the glacier, descend from ice to cloud forest in a single push, and follow original Inca stone paths to Llaqtapata. From that ridge, you get your first distant view of Machu Picchu across the canyon, a moment only this trail offers.
The difference is how you recover. After the hardest day, you do not sleep in a tent. You check into our exclusive Colpapampa Skydomes at 2,800 meters. A real bed, private bathroom, hot shower, glass roof to the stars, and private sauna and jacuzzi to restore your body. Night two is spent in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, ready for an early entry into Machu Picchu.
Built for fit travelers short on time, the 3 Day Salkantay Express is the fastest trekking route to Machu Picchu on foot that keeps the true high mountain experience intact.

Travel Essentials
Important Information
High-Altitude Consideration
This is a high-altitude, high-intensity trek that crosses the Salkantay Pass at 4,630 meters (15,190 ft). You must arrive in Cusco at least 48 hours before departure to properly acclimatize. Day 1 features a challenging 23.5km route with a long ascent at altitude and should not be underestimated. Walk at your own pace, listen to your guide, and stay well-hydrated.
Airport Arrival & Connections
Upon landing in Lima, you must clear immigration and customs, collect your checked bags, and re-check them for your domestic flight to Cusco. Ensure you have at least a 3-hour layover window between international and domestic flights to account for these mandatory security procedures.
Luggage Policy & Storage
You do not need to carry all your belongings on the trail. Pack horses will carry up to 7kg (15lbs) of your personal gear, allowing you to hike with just a lightweight daypack. We provide secure, complimentary luggage storage at our Cusco headquarters for your main luggage for the duration of the trek. (Note: Machu Picchu strictly enforces a maximum daypack size of 40 x 35 x 20 cm).
Cash
While major services are included, please carry a supply of Peruvian Soles in small denominations. Local markets and small vendors in Aguas Calientes rarely accept credit cards and often cannot provide change for large bills (such as 100 Soles). You will need cash for your final day lunch, tips, and personal expenses.
Insurance
Ensure your travel policy provides comprehensive coverage. Your plan must specifically include high-altitude medical protection up to 5,000 meters, trip cancellation, and emergency medical evacuation services valid for the duration of your time in the Peruvian Andes.
Mandatory Documentation
You must carry your original, valid passport for the entire duration of this trip. You will be required to present it at trail checkpoints, to board the train, and when entering the Machu Picchu citadel. Please note: Digital images, photos, or paper photocopies are strictly not accepted by authorities.
Packing Essentials & Climate Guide
Pack smart for drastically shifting climates—from freezing alpine temperatures at the Salkantay Pass to warm, humid conditions in the jungle zones.
Weather Gear: Waterproof jacket and pants, a warm down jacket, gloves, and a beanie/toque for the high pass.
Clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers, comfortable trekking pants, warm layers for night, and quick-dry t-shirts for the lower jungle trails.
Footwear: Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots with solid ankle support, quality trekking socks, and sandals for camp.
Protection & Sun Care: High SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, a wide-brimmed sun hat, and effective insect repellent.
Hydration: Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder (boiled drinking water is provided daily on the trail).
Gear Extras: Headlamp with extra batteries, a power bank (charging points are limited), and trekking poles.
Pro-Tip: Tripods, selfie sticks, drones and large backpacks over 25L are prohibited inside Machu Picchu. Keep your daypack light.

FAQs
Challenging. Day 1 is 23.5km with a full ascent to 4,630m, Day 2 is 20km downhill and into jungle. You do not need technical skills, but you need good fitness, prior hiking experience, and 48 hours acclimatized in Cusco. It is not a beginner trek.
Same Salkantay Pass, same glacier, same first view of Machu Picchu from Llaqtapata. The Express cuts the acclimatization days and condenses the distance. You hike longer days and skip the slow build-up. If you are short on time and fit, Express is more efficient.
Night 1 is in our exclusive Colpapampa Skydomes at 2,800m. Private bathroom, real bed, hot shower, Wi-Fi, panoramic dining room, and private sauna and jacuzzi access to recover after the Pass. Night 2 is in a hand-picked 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes with private bathroom.
Yes. The sauna and jacuzzi are part of our private wet area at Colpapampa Skydomes, reserved only for our guests. Not shared with other companies.
No. Pack horses carry up to 7kg of your personal gear. You hike with just a daypack with water, layers and snacks. We store your main luggage free in Cusco.
Yes, mandatory 48 hours before. This trek goes directly to 4,630m on Day 1. Without acclimatization the risk of altitude sickness is very high.
Your guide carries emergency oxygen and a first aid kit. An emergency horse is on standby for the group. If you cannot continue, the guide will assess and arrange safe descent. Your safety is priority.
Twice. On Day 2 you see it from a distance at Llaqtapata across the canyon, a view only this route gives you. On Day 3 you enter the citadel for a 2-hour private guided tour in the morning.
Yes. All meals on Day 1 and Day 2 on the trail prepared by our trekking chef, plus a celebratory dinner in Aguas Calientes on Day 2. Final day lunch in Aguas Calientes is not included so you have freedom to choose.
Yes. You can upgrade to Vistadome train for $67 with panoramic windows, and add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for $75. Both must be requested months in advance due to very limited permits.

Sleeping Under the Stars at 4,600m
I never thought I could sleep in a luxury bed while staring at the Milky Way through a transparent dome. The Salkantay glacier right in front of you at sunrise — absolutely unreal. Worth every penny.

The Dome Made the Trek Unforgettable
We did the full Salkantay Trek and stayed at the dome on night two. After a hard day of hiking, coming back to a real bed, hot shower and that view of the mountain? Nothing compares to that.

Best Night of My Life
I have camped across Patagonia and Nepal but nothing matched this. The dome is warm, beautifully designed and the silence at 4,600m is something else entirely. I woke up at 3am just to stare at the stars.
