The Signature Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 2 Days | Hotel Stay
The Last 12 Kilometers to Machu Picchu
You do not need four days to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. You need the right twelve kilometers.
The Short Inca Trail 2 Days follows the final and most spectacular section of the original Inca Trail from KM 104. This is the official UNESCO World Heritage path and permits are limited to 250 hikers per day.
Over two days you walk on original Inca stone paths through the cloud forest. You explore Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna, two important Inca sites that are not visited on the standard train journey to Machu Picchu. Then you climb to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate at 2700 meters, where you get your first view of Machu Picchu on foot, just as the Incas arrived.
This itinerary includes an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes in a comfortable hotel with private bathroom and hot shower. Because you sleep at the foot of the sanctuary, you take the early bus on Day 2 and enter Machu Picchu in soft morning light before the main crowds arrive from Cusco.
It is the most efficient way to experience the emotion of the Inca Trail and a full guided tour of Machu Picchu in just two days.

- Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night – 1 night in hotel in Aguas Calientes (not camping)
- Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles – The final, most beautiful section of the original Inca Trail
- Highlight: KM 104 → Wiñay Wayna → Sun Gate (Inti Punku) → Machu Picchu
- Max Altitude: 2,700m / 8,858 ft at Sun Gate – Lower than Cusco, easier to breathe
- Difficulty: Moderate – 6 to 7 hours hiking, 600m ascent, some steep stone steps
- Permits: Inca Trail permit included – Only 250 spots per day, sells out months ahead
The Dual-Circuit Experience
This itinerary includes both circuits. Circuit 1 on Day 1 for the panoramic postcard view and Circuit 3 on Day 2 for the Royalty temple route.
Circuit 1 on Day 1: The Panoramic View. You enter from the Sun Gate and arrive at the Guardian’s House for the classic postcard panorama of Machu Picchu with Huayna Picchu behind it. This is the wide, high altitude view with terraces and alpacas.
Circuit 3 on Day 2: The Royalty Route. You return early for a deep exploration inside the citadel. The Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, the Intihuatana ceremonial stone and the Temple of the Condor. This is the intimate temple circuit among the sacred stonework.
Why Choose the Short Inca Trail Experience
- The Most Beautiful 12 Kilometers: You hike the final section from KM 104 through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna and the Sun Gate. This is the most visually rich part of the original trail.
- Arrive Through the Sun Gate: You enter Machu Picchu on foot through Inti Punku, just as the Incas did.
- Stay in a Real Hotel. You sleep in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes with private bathroom and hot shower, not in a tent.
- Enter Early on Day 2: Because you overnight in Aguas Calientes, you take the early bus and enter Machu Picchu before the day trippers arrive from Cusco.

Important Information
High Altitude Consideration
This is a moderate-altitude trek, not high-altitude like Salkantay. The max altitude is 2,700m at the Sun Gate, which is lower than Cusco at 3,400m, making it easier to breathe. However, you are still hiking for 6-7 hours on stone steps. You must arrive in Cusco at least 48 hours before departure to acclimatize. Day 1 includes a steep 1-hour ascent to Wiñay Wayna and should not be underestimated.
Airport Arrival
Upon landing in Lima, you must clear immigration and customs, collect your checked bags, and then re-check them for your domestic flight to Cusco. Warning: Ensure you have at least a three-hour window between flights to account for these mandatory procedures. This is required even if your bags are tagged through to Cusco.
Luggage Policy
You do not need to carry heavy gear on this trek. There are no pack horses – this is a hotel trek. You will hike with only a small daypack. We provide secure, complimentary luggage storage at our Cusco headquarters and free storage at Ollantaytambo station for your main luggage for the duration of the tour. Note: Machu Picchu enforces a strict 25L daypack limit inside Circuit 1 & 3.
Cash
While permits, trains, hotels and entries are included, carry Peruvian Soles in small denominations. Local vendors and restaurants in Aguas Calientes rarely accept cards and cannot break large bills. You will need cash for Dinner on Day 1, Lunch on Day 2, and tips. ATMs in Aguas Calientes charge high fees – withdraw in Cusco.
Insurance
Ensure your travel policy provides comprehensive coverage. For this 2-day trek, your plan should include medical coverage up to 3,000 meters, trip cancellation (permits are 100% non-refundable by Peruvian law), and emergency evacuation valid for the Andes. We strongly recommend insurance that covers train cancellations due to strikes or landslides.
Mandatory Documentation
You must carry your original, valid passport for the duration of this trip. You will be required to present it at KM 104 checkpoint, to board the train, and again at the entrance to Machu Picchu for BOTH Circuit 1 on Day 1 and Circuit 3 on Day 2. Please note that digital images, photocopies, or expired passports are not accepted – you will be denied entry with no refund.
Packing Essentials
Pack smart for cloud forest: cool mornings, warm afternoons, and possible rain. Keep your main luggage in storage and carry only essentials in your daypack for two days.
- Note: Your daypack for Machu Picchu must not exceed 25L / 40 x 35 x 20 cm for Circuit 1 & 3.
- Essential Documents: Original passport mandatory – must match permit exactly. Train and bus tickets provided by us.
- Protection: High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat – UV is extreme at Sun Gate.
- Weather Gear: Waterproof jacket or poncho, warm fleece layer for early bus to Machu Picchu.
- Clothing: Moisture-wicking hiking layers, trekking pants, comfortable t-shirt, underwear and socks for 2 days.
- Footwear: Broken-in hiking shoes or trail shoes with good grip – stone steps can be slippery. No need for heavy boots.
- Hydration: Reusable water bottle 1L-1.5L. Boiled water available to refill at KM 104.
- Small Extras: Headlamp for early morning, power bank, camera, small cash in soles, trekking poles (we provide).
Pro-Tip: Tripods, selfie sticks, drones and backpacks over 25L are strictly prohibited inside Machu Picchu Circuit 1 & 3. Keep your daypack light for photos at Guardian’s House.
