2 days / 1 night Moderate 4,200m / 13,780ft. 10 Expedition

The Short Cultural Route Above the Sacred Valley

This two-day journey to Machu Picchu is one of the most efficient and rewarding short treks in the Andes, combining high-altitude landscapes with a rarely visited Inca site.

The route leads to Huchuy Qosqo (“Little Cusco”), an impressive archaeological complex perched above the Sacred Valley, offering panoramic views and a deeper understanding of Inca architecture and strategy.

Unlike longer treks, this experience delivers a complete Andean hiking and cultural experience in just one day of trekking, followed by a comfortable train journey and a guided visit to Machu Picchu.

It’s designed for travelers who want a short, meaningful trek, without the logistics or time commitment of multi-day expeditions.

  • Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night
  • Highlights: Huchuy Qosqo ruins, Sacred Valley views, high Andean pass, Machu Picchu
  • Max Altitude: 4,050 m
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Why Choose the Huchuy Qosqo Trek?

  • The Best Short Trek to Machu Picchu: A complete trekking experience in just one day of hiking, ideal for tight itineraries.
  • A Hidden Inca Site: Explore Huchuy Qosqo, a lesser-visited archaeological complex with terraces, ceremonial areas, and valley views.
  • Scenic and Efficient: Cross a high Andean pass and descend directly into the Sacred Valley, combining mountain and cultural landscapes in one route.
  • Moderate and Accessible: Challenging enough to feel rewarding, but without extreme altitude exposure or long trekking days.
  • A Smooth Finish: End with a train to Aguas Calientes and a guided visit to Machu Picchu.

Details of the trip

Day 1 | Cusco – Tauca – Huchuy Qosqo – Lamay – Aguas Calientes

We depart early from Cusco, heading toward the highland village of Tauca (3,750 m), where the trek begins.

The Experience

The route starts across open Andean terrain, gradually ascending toward a high pass at approximately 4,050 meters.

As the landscape shifts into classic puna terrain, you’ll have wide views of surrounding peaks such as Verónica and Pitusiray.

After crossing the pass, the trail descends into a canyon system, following ancient paths toward Huchuy Qosqo.

This section reveals Inca stonework, agricultural terraces, and remnants of original trails, offering insight into how the Incas connected remote regions.

At the site, your guide will explain the history and function of this strategic settlement, known for its elevated position and commanding views over the Sacred Valley.

The Descent & Transition

We continue descending to Lamay (2,900 m), where transport takes us to Ollantaytambo.

From here, we board the train to Aguas Calientes, marking the transition from mountains to jungle.

The Experience

Enjoy a guided tour of approximately 2 hours, exploring the agricultural terraces, temples, and ceremonial areas of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You’ll gain insight into how the site was organized into agricultural, residential, and religious sectors, a reflection of the Inca worldview.

No technical experience is required, but a basic level of fitness and comfort with walking at altitude will help you enjoy the experience.

What Our Guests Say

Real experiences from travelers who slept under the Andean sky

The Dome Made the Trek Unforgettable

We did the full Salkantay Trek and stayed at the dome on night two. After a hard day of hiking, coming back to a real bed, hot shower and that view of the mountain? Nothing compares to that.

Best Night of My Life

I have camped across Patagonia and Nepal but nothing matched this. The dome is warm, beautifully designed and the silence at 4,600m is something else entirely. I woke up at 3am just to stare at the stars.
